Kitchen Renovation- the baby edition!
Uncategorized — By Shannon Schmid on December 4, 2009 at 5:29 pmSo… I wanted to get my daughter a play kitchen for Christmas this year. I looked everywhere, but they are REALLY expensive. She is only 16 months old -and I can’t quite stomach paying hundreds of dollars for a toy! And in the interest of being thrifty I often shop at a childrens consignment store – and one day I saw they had gotten in a childs play kitchen!
The kitchen set was an ugly shade of blue, was missing some parts, and was pretty banged up. But… it was only $15 dollars! So I brought it home. I spread out a sheet, washed it up, and sprayed primer all over it.
Did you know you’re supposed to shake a can of primer before spraying it??? What? You did know?? Well why didn’t ANYONE TELL ME?!?!
Yeah, so it turns out – you do have to shake a can of spray primer. So after I sprayed the whole thing, it turned out kind of lumpy. Which is why it was great that my dad came to visit us, because he helped me sand it down.
Next, we sprayed it with a glossy white paint, and my dad took all the doors up and we sprayed them a beautiful ballet slipper pink!

And finally, here is the kitchen set almost complete! I still need to add some purple trim to it so it will match some other kitchen accessories Molly is getting this Christmas, but overall I’m really happy with it. Plus, it’s “green” because I recycled it:)
My dad is posing with it above – and it makes the kitchen set even more special that he helped make it! Aren’t grandpa’s wonderful?? I’ll post a finished picture of it once it is done!
The best part? The whole thing cost me about $45 dollars in primer and paint. So much more economical than buying a new kitchen set, don’t you think? Yay for a thrifty Christmas!!

LOVE it! Shan that's gorgeous and Molly will certainly enjoy that!! I love that you and your Dad worked on that for her – I bet this is a toy that gets kept well after she stops playing with it
And I have to say it's MUCH nicer than the overpriced plastic kitchen sets I've seen in the stores that always end up looking rather shabby after a short period of use. You can't re-furbish those – only wash them and that doesn't seem to work too well. This kitchen set can stay fresh for Molly for a good long time.
And I just love love LOVE how green it is!! You are wonderful!!

That is so cute! You guys did a great job! And yes, it is more special because Grandpa helped!! I have some very special things (including my bedside table!) that my wonderful Grandpa has made. He can't do that anymore. So I will keep those things forever.

I love your renovation, it looks absolutely stunning
My parents got me a play kitchen when I was little, and it was in the middle of the room (wrapped, I think) and I spent the whole of Christmas morning walking round it to get other presents from under the tree (I was always the one to give out presents to the family!) until my mum finally pointed it out to me!

Wow, lady! I nominate you for a new Kid's HGTV show. This is amazing and I was about to refer you to Toys R Us for the Dora kitchen version but I luv yours better!
[Reply]
Don't you just love being able to do stuff like that and forgo the hundreds of dollars on the plastic toys? Grandpa's are great!
[Reply]
Too cute! Love the pink and I'm sure she will/does too. That's way better, and way more stylish, than the play kitchen I had!
[Reply]
You did an awesome job on that! And saved some $ in the process which is always great. It was originally $90 at Target 3 years ago. I bought one for our girls for Christmas then. I'm pretty sure their new version is over $100 though. I wish I had thought to paint it up all pretty like yours.
