2 Ingredient Fun

On a recent weekend afternoon I was cleaning out my pantry. I had a billion spices that had expired and I also found expired baking soda and assorted oils. I was feeling rather bad about throwing them out – what a waste! And then I decided to mix two of the ingredients together in a bowl so my daughter could at least “play cook” and mix! But the two ingredients I mixed for her turned into a really NEAT substance…that did a great job of imitating heavy packable SNOW!

Pretend Snow – The Accidental Recipe!

how to make snow

When you handle the “pretend snow” it just leaves a light powdery feeling on your hands. And after your finished playing and rinse the powder off – it leaves your hands really moisturized. Strange! Anyway- super simple!

INGREDIENTS:

  • One box of Arm & hammer Baking soda
  • About 3/4- 1cup of canola oil (I used Canola since that was the oil that was expired. Any oil would work)

DIRECTIONS:

Just dribble your oil in the baking soda and mix it, until it starts to clump (about 3/4 of a cup oil to one box of baking soda). Then gradually work in the baking soda on the sides of the bowl until it’s all incorporated. It becomes “packable” snow pretty immediately- and you can always add additional oil if you need, so start slow. Less is definitely more in this concoction! The Baking soda is what makes it super white and also so finely powdered- so that ingredient is vital.

Now just let your favorite kid build a snowman, igloo, or make snowballs…even in the dead of summer!
