My Luck of the Irish Story! #inluck
General — By MilkandCuddles on March 2, 2012 at 7:03 amSo St. Patrick’s Day is coming… and I have a TRUE STORY of how the “luck of the Irish” has impacted my life! Wanna hear?
After college I worked behind the scenes on several TV shows in NYC. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. But I also wasn’t sure how my dream of having a family would fit in with city life, and the long long hours I was logging. When one of the shows I was working on was cancelled mid season, I was left with the question of what to do next. And I knew I really needed to take some time to think about what I wanted in life. To figure out my priorities.
I had always wanted to spend some time in my father’s country ofIreland. And my Aunt mentioned during a family trip that I had family in Ireland that was looking for an au pair (nanny). In perhaps the most spontaneous and crazy decision of my life – a few weeks later I was boarding a plane to live and work with family I didn’t really know for a year!
The first bit of Irish magic happened then. I discovered wonderful family, an Aunt, Uncle and cousins that turned out to be just the sweetest and most fun anyone could have asked for! And I fell in love with Ireland! But it was still quite a culture shock! And so a friend suggested I keep a journal online of my travels. I did- and I ended up becoming acquainted with a wonderful group of readers from all over the world. They would give me advice and travel trips while I was in Europe. They truly made me feel cared about in a country that I didn’t really know anyone in.
One of the readers of my Ireland blog, was particularly helpful. He would always leave really thoughtful comments on my posts and leave me great tips and advice. We became very good friends and I started to look forward to hearing from him each week. After a year of living in Ireland, I came back to the NYC to live and work. And my blog friend suggested that we meet. After a fair bit of cajoling and overcoming shyness on my part- we met. He was flying in from Texas, to NYC for the weekend. He was getting in later in the day- and I offered to meet him and bring him dinner since he wouldn’t have had a chance to eat yet.
I was nervous to meet him. Because although I had never seen him in person, I’d known him for close to two years at this point. And our wonderful unexpected friendship – had turned into a bit of a crush really:)
And that day I carried a pizza up to the hotel steps where he was going to stay, and finally met him. And on 49th St. & Broadway, in the heart of Times Square – for the first time I saw my future husband! The man I would have a sweet baby girl with, and love forever.
It took moving toIreland to meet my American someone. Who knew?
