What’s your favorite Fairytale? #redboxsummerfamilyfun

I have an almost 4 year old…so my life is full of watching Fairytales, and reading Fairytales! My daughter is in love with all the Disney Princesses, but she also loves some of the older stories too, from the Brothers Grimm to Hans Christian Andersen…

(Midsummer Eve, C.1908 by Edward Robert Hughes)

But my favorite “Fairy Tale” isn’t a specific story. It’s the Irish legend of fairies themselves!

-My father is from Ireland and I grew up hearing stories about how fairies and leprechauns might be watching from the hedge as you do a good deed, and perhaps later might send a little magic your way!

-My dad would make up Fairy stories for me as I sat on his lap as a child. If we took a walk and saw a shiny silver gum wrapper laying on the sidewalk he would pick it up and put it in his pocket saying “the fairies would like this little shiny thing, lets pick it up for them!”

-In the winter time in upstate NY we might wake up to snow that was frozen covering our yard. When we looked at snow like that, my dad would say Fairies had sprinkled some fairy dust on the snow to make us smile at it glittering!

(John Atkinson Grimshaw – Iris, detail of the fairy, 1886)

Fairy stories inspired me as a child because they represented the magic in life that if you pay attention – you can see, and appreciate. The idea that the everyday can be special… maybe even enchanted if you choose to see it that way!
